Bronze House on Chain Bridge Road

Firms: David Jameson Architect

Spec houses are typically designed to appeal to the masses. But this one, clad in patinated bronze, with walls of mahogany-framed windows and a garage for a car collector, is highly customized. “It’s totally unique in the market,” says architect David Jameson, who designed it for a parcel in DC’s Kent that used to contain a tennis court. Also unusual: It doesn’t have a basement. Functions that are often subterranean, such as a game room and an in-law suite, are instead on the third level. As of press time, the home was still for

Home design ideas: Adding a modern edge to a nautical lake house

Designer Vanessa Helmick updates the classic beach theme in the guest room of this Maine lake house.Sean Litchfield

Vanessa Helmick’s clients weren’t kidding when they asked for a strict blue and white palette in the Maine lake house that is a gathering place for their extended family. “I wanted to incorporate other colors, but they had always dreamed of blue and white,” says the owner of Fiore Home. So, the interiors of the Sebago Lake home lean heavily nautical. To keep the lofty guest room from seeming kitschy, Helmick chose a modern platform bed as the centerpiece and popped in a graphic block-print pillow with a dash of terra cotta.

1 Helmick used Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace paint for the millwork and Oxford White for the walls. “Accentuating the architectural details helps a high-ceilinged space not feel cavernous,” she says.

Ten residences with deliberately unfinished interiors

A holiday home in northern Italy that was decorated on a budget and a Hackney apartment with exposed concrete walls are among the residences in this lookbook, which showcases interiors that have been left purposely unfinished.

Peeling wallpaper, floors that have been left untreated and hanging cables give character to these interior design projects, which look as though they’ve been abandoned halfway through decorating.

By stripping back the properties down to their shells, the interior designers have given the occupants of these homes the chance to complete them according to their own tastes and resources – whether that be filling them with quirky items or keeping them minimalist.

This is the latest in our lookbooks series, which provides visual inspiration from Dezeen’s archive. For more inspiration see previous lookbooks featuring colorful living rooms that make a statement, homes with walk-in wardrobes and beautiful brutalist interiors.
